I discovered that the writers had dropped the hint, albeit much more subtley and less directly, before that moment in "Ex Marks the Spot". But it was more like they were testing the waters, seeing what kind of reaction they would get from the audience, as opposed to writing any purposeful, concrete subtext.
In my review of S1 I have found 2 episodes so far where Shalimar was asked by a guest character if she and Brennan were "involved".
-"Lit Fuse"
Ashley Elliot asks if Shal and Bren are together, and Shal replies "he's more like a brother".
-" Dark Star Rising"
Bo asks Shal if she and Bren are an item (well, he starts to anyway), to which Shal simply states, "Teammates."
Now, those moments in and of themselves are the beginnings of subtext. But did anyone notice the progression, there? Shal's response went from "Like a brother" to "teammates" in just a couple episodes. So she stopped looking at him like a brother? More like a friend? A friend that she could get "close" to? And let's not forget the flirtasious teasing from Shal directed at Bren in the episodes between the ones that I mentioned above...
