Riley instantly felt like a total heel.
"I'm sorry, sweety, but I can't go with you" she said apologetically. She really was sorry, almost sorry enough to change her mind and stay. "Maybe next time, huh?"

She opened her mouth to say...what? That she promised? Promptly she closed it again. It was a promise that she couldn't keep. Instead she just smiled, a bit sadly, her heart breaking for the little girl. There wasn't going to be a next time.

David put lizzie on the couch and showed riley to the door before lizzie started bawling like she would any minute. " ill see you tomorrow at work"

Riley stalked away from Carter's house unsure of what exactly to feel. She shouldn't have hurt Lizzie like that. She shouldn't have let her guard down even the little bit that she had. She should never have gone to dinner. She wanted to be anywhere but there in that moment.

David sighed and took lizzie to her room and tried to calm her. He ended up letting her sleep with him since it was the only way to calm her.
He woke up in a neatruel mood and heade dinto work and kept busy all day

Riley hardly slept that night. Her conflicting feelings wouldn't let her. She woke up in the morning feeling more exhausted than when she'd gone to bed. She kept seeing the hurt she'd caused little Lizzie. More than that, she kept thinking about Carter.
Sitting in the gatehouse supervising her shift crew, she could hardly keep her eyes open. She nodded off once and almost fell off of her stool.

Glen who was also the same rank as riley sent her to the office since she had falllen asleep twice. If he let her go he would have gotten in trouble himself
