The Setup: victoria is a MP in the army and she has a secret that she keeps only to herself for her safety and the safety to others. 'If anyone ever found out, more than her career would be at stake'
David is her closest male friend there and they seem to have some sort of attraction to one another, nature of the attraction is uncertain.

David sat back in his chair sighing as he read through his reports and filling out transfer orders. He had been up most of the night and it was catching up with him. He yawned and signed off on the last of the files.
Private davis came in and stood at attention at at the desk causing david to look up.
" sir here as requested" he saluted and stood tall.
David got up " at ease" he said as he came near private davis " it says here you are requesting a transfer?"
Davis " yes sir"
" how come private?" david looked at the boy.
" well sir, i would like to be closer to my family"
David nodded " very well i will send out the papers and you should be able to leave within a week you shall be missed private"
" you may go"
" aye sir thank you sir" he sstood at attention for a second and headed out.
" private if you see Specialist Riley send her in please" he asked as he leaned against the desk and took the picture that was there and stared at it.
Private davis went in search of riley " riley you are being ordered to the seargent"

"Specialist Riley!"
She spun, honing in on the voice that had called out from behind her. A gangly young private from her squad, Davis if she remembered correctly, was walking quickly toward her. He snapped her a salute, which she returned wryly.
"What is it private."
"Staff Sergeant Carter wants to speak with you, ma'm."
She smiled. "Duly noted. I take it you just came from his office?"
"Yes m'am."
Her smile broadened as she looked at him. "Did the Sergeant grant your transfer request?"
It was the Private's turn to break into a smile. "Yes m'am he did."
"Congratulations, Private," she said, and meant it. "I guess I better go report."
Another round of salutes and they went their separate ways. Nervously she straightened her berette and took a deep breath. The voice of the Private talking to some of his friends reached her ears, too low for that of a normal person's hearing.
"I think the Sarge has it in for Vic..."
She gritted her teeth. Vic. She hated that nickname, but of course it had stuck. She sighed, feeling her stomach knot. Why would the Private think she was in trouble...?

She had removed her berette after stepping into the building as code dictated, and was currently wringing it in her hands. She hated to admit that she was nervous. She hardly knew anything about her CO, and she had been serving under his command for a year now. It wasn't just the unknown that bothered her. It was what the private had said.
"You may go in now," a Private by the name of Jerrison informed her, holding the Sergeant's office door open.
Riley nodded to the Private and tried to remember to breathe. Surely she hadn't done anything wrong. Surely. Surely?

once riley was inside the private shut the door and david looked up.
" at ease riley you didnt do anything wrong" he could tell she was worried.
" i sent for you because you have been promoted to corperal and i thought maybe a private meeting would be better for you then a huge blowout" he walked to her and handed her her new rank pins " congraduation and this means you get to be my second in command" he smiled.
" care for a drink?" he said as he walked over to the little fridge and grabbed some sodas' handing her one
" you can relax here be yourself"

Her mind had locked up on the word 'promoted'. Numbly she took the drink that he had offered her, but she didn't move, except to stare down at the new Corporal's stripes she held in her other hand.
He was right about her not wanting a big blowout, not that she would really have anyone to invite to it. She was friendly with her squademates, but ultimately kept them at a distance, for their protection as well as her own. She should have been happy. Any other Specialist in her squad would have been thrilled. A part of her was thrilled. But that was overshadowed with apprehension. Corporal meant team leader. Leadership meant it was harder to blend in. The focus of everyone in her command would rest squarely on her.
She looked up at Sergeant Carter. She didn't know what to say.

I can't relax, she thought. And I can't afford to forget...
To her own chagrin, she had to admit that he was right. She did deserve this promotion. She couldn't help being a good cop, and a voice at the back of her mind was quite loudly chastising her for it. She'd been both hoping and at the same time dreading making Corporal. Now it was time to face the music.
Standing there, taut as gauraut wire, she still couldn't bring herself to relax enough to sit.

If only you knew, sir, she thought silently. But his joke and the little twinkle in his eye had snapped the tension in her. A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth and finally she sat, though the voice was still yelling in her subconscious.
His humour was infectious, and his confidence in her bolsered her mood. This was a side of her CO that she had never seen before, and it was more than a little offputting, if only because she didn't quite know how to react to it.

He continued to smile at her and thought about inviting her for a friendly dinner one of these days but wondered how she would react to a wild 2 year old.
They talked for a while until he decided to invite her over for a friendly dinner whenever she wanted to come

His invitation to dinner surprised her. Outwardly, she raised a thoughtful eyebrow, keeping her expression carefully controlled. The silence between them stretched. Considering him, she decided that one dinner couldn't hurt. One dinner wouldn't reveal anything.
"I accept, sir, " she said, smiling but wondering if he might be up to something.

"How about tomorrow night?" she heard herself say, and couldn't believe the words that had just come out of her mouth. Sergeant Carter, now on the phone, shot her a quick surprised look. Then his attention was pulled back to the person he had on the line.
